UP844 with SP4449 visits the South Sound!
May 12th - What a great day for railfanning! Railfans from all over the Northwest have come to western Washington State to see these two massive locomotives run the main line from Portland, Oregon to the UP Yard at Fife (Tacoma), Washington. After five display days in the yard, the locomotives will pull special excursion trains on Friday (5/18) and Saturday (5/19) from Tacoma up north to Everette, Wa and back. I would have loved to made one of those excursions, but could not even consider the cost of the tickets, much less get time off work. On Sunday, the locomotives will again be on display in the Fife UP Yard, departing on Tuesday (5/22) for the return to Portland and then to Cheyenne.
Su-u-u-r-r-e...You can go to many different web sites and see great photos and wonderful video of engines like these two.....but to SEE them in person!! LQQK at the massive drivers and feel the heat...You just have to see it in person.
The OMRS membership started talking about this special run back in February of 2007 when the UP announced the special run. Some of the guys were interested, but nothing came of it until the week before the event. Then everyone kinda sorted maybe thought they might find time to go watch the train roll by. The Olympia NMRA Clinic group also discussed the event at their January meeting, but interest was fairly low key.
Anyway, pick a link below to see photos from different members of both the OMRS and the Olympia Clinic of the NMRA. Several links have comments from the members. Very interesting reading.
ENJOY!

John(OMRS)Final video - Homeward bound on May 22nd. Well I got the video I missed when the Special came north. On the return trip south through the South Sound on May 22nd I ended up taking the morning off and spent about 2 hours waiting at the spot I had picked out. The rail crossing at Rich Road in South Olympia has an unobstructed view in both directions. The approach from the northeast is a gentle curve to the left and results in the main going due south. Seeing these locomotives again was really impressive. However, the resulting video is 43 seconds long and is a 17 meg video file. I'm sure most internet surfers won't wait for the download, but take my word for it...the sight was awesome!(Best viewed with Windows Media Player/Viewer.)
